“Author David Shimer exhaustive research into all the implications of Russia’s covert influences on the American electorate makes “Rigged: America, Russia, and One Hundred Years of Covert Electoral Interference” a must reading!  Especially, now, prior to the US November elections!  Shimer has great credentials, having studied under Professor Timothy Snyder at Davenport College, Yale, as an Associate Fellow, and as a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University.

Shimer emphasizes the threat still posed by social media and how Facebook, Twitter, Google, Youtube, Reddit, as well as Russia’s RT network and Sputnik influenced the 2016 elections and may have affected voting processes.  Recent Congressional hearings on whether internet giants, Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Apple should be regulated or broken up under anti-trust laws is only now beginning.  If not regulated, beginning with repealing liability protection under Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1996, those profit-maximizing monopolies will continue threatening democracies worldwide, as I have also described in “Steering Our Powers of Persuasion”.
